Alsace Tasting 24 July 2021

Aug 06

We were welcomed back to our first post-lockdown meeting with an absolutely splendid tasting, hosted by Chris. It was lovely to meet up again after so long and to catch up with valued friends.

We also took a moment to remember and drink a toast to Peter Lee-Smith, who will be much missed for both his enthusiasm and depth of knowledge.

The topic for the evening was Alsace, as ever Chris provided a splendid selection that had many of those present in their happy place. Also provided was a splendid selection of Cheeses and other delicious morsels that matched up with the wines beautifully – the Munster cheese in particular brought out the full complexities of some of the wines.

The selection of wines focussed on the wonderful white wines that are so typical of the region, highlighting the grapes that thrive and reflect the terroir so well.

The wines tasted were:-

1.   Domaine Paul Blanck, Auxerrois, Vieilles Vignes, 2016

2.   Henri Ehrhart, Muscat, 2018

3.   Hugel, Classic Pinot Blanc, 2016

4.  Hugel, Classic Pinot Gris, 2016

5.  Domaine Paul Blanck, Furstentum, Grand Cru Riesling, 2016

6   Domaine Schlumberger, Grand Cru Gewurtztraminer, 2015

7.   Rolly Gassmann, Vendages Tardives Riesling, 2000

8.   Hugel, Selection de Grains Nobles Gewurtztraminer, 1997
