Our July meeting was a trip to Astley Vineyard in Stourport on Severn, one of the oldest vineyards in the UK. It was one of the most enjoyable and informative Vineyard visits we have had.
We were given a tour of the Vineyard by Tim and Chris Haywood, whose enthusiasm and commitment for their chosen occupation shone through the entire visit.
We toured the vineyard and met ‘Old Gnarly’, one of the oldest vines who lives up to his name and had the pleasure of tasting the Bacchus amongst the vines.
Following the short walk back through the woods we were given a tour of the new winery before returning to the Cellar Door shop where we were introduced to Bev Haywood.
Chris then led us through a tasting of the Madeleine Angevine, Severn Vale and Late Harvest wines. In addition we were fortunate to taste their Sparkling wine, along with some fine examples of local cheese, smoked fish and charcuterie.
We thoroughly enjoyed all the wines, several people commenting later that the visit had changed their views on English wines, it certainly gave us a new perspective on the wines being produced on our doorstep.
It can confidently be said that we would all recommend both a visit and the wines.
