Our August meeting proved to be an interesting evening. Members were asked to bring a wine that has been ‘lurking’ and had now possibly fallen outside it’s drinking window.
We had a wide range of wines covering a span of over 30 years, the vast majority of which were reds. that said possibly one of the most interesting wine of the evening was a comparative youngster in the form of a 2012 Gewurztraminer from Villa Maria. It displayed none of the Gewurztraminer characteristics when first poured being much more Reisling-esque. However through the evening it morphed back into the more expected flavour profiles and was deemed to have survived being forgotten!
Of the ten wines we had only two were deemed to have died in the bottle – both of which were over 30 years old, a result which surprised us. Not all of the wines were showing at their best but they were all enjoyable to drink and went well with the excellent selection of food provided by everyone.
The evening was voted a great success and certainly an exercise worth repeating in the future.
